Stop Words in MySQL¶
Stop words are one of the simplest but most misunderstood parts of MySQL’s full‑text search. Students often hear that MySQL “ignores common words,” but they rarely get a clean explanation of why this happens or how it affects search results. This guide breaks it down in a way that’s easy to teach and easy to remember.
What Stop Words Are¶
Stop words are very common words that MySQL’s full‑text search engine chooses to ignore.
They typically include everyday terms such as:

- the
- is
- on
- at
- to
MySQL treats these words as too frequent to be useful for distinguishing one document from another.
Why MySQL Uses Stop Words¶
1. They don’t help identify relevant documents¶
Words that appear in almost every row provide no meaningful signal.
If every document contains “the,” then searching for “the” would match everything.
2. They reduce index size¶
By skipping extremely common words, MySQL keeps the full‑text index smaller and faster to query.
3. They improve ranking¶
Removing noise words allows more meaningful terms to influence relevance scoring.
How Stop Words Affect Searches¶
Searches containing only stop words return no results¶
If a student searches for “the and a,” MySQL returns nothing because all three terms are ignored.
Mixed queries drop the stop words¶
A search for “the history of computing” becomes “history computing.”
This can surprise students if they expect an exact match.
Stop words can change the meaning of a query¶
For example, “to be or not to be” becomes “be not be,” which is obviously not ideal for phrase‑based searching.
Where MySQL Gets Its Stop Words¶
MySQL uses a built‑in stopword list by default.
This list is stored internally and automatically applied to all full‑text indexes unless you override it.
The default list includes around 500 common English words.
